Tech Ambassador

2014

The Tech Ambassador program is a No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Enhancing Education through Technology (EETT) Entitlement Grant initiative. This project promotes effective integration of instructional learning tools, which is an objective of this Title II, Part D program. Less formally, this project aims to transform teachers from digital immigrants to digital natives. As Douglas Rushkoff states, “Children are native to cyberspace and we adults are immigrants.” The end result of this state of mind in regards to education is that teachers that are digital immigrants do not capture the interest of the digital natives. The main goal is to get teachers comfortable teaching with technology and create digital learning environments in their 21st century classrooms.

The Tech Ambassador program concept evolved in Spring of 2003 with the idea that two teachers from every public and OCR-approved private elementary schools would be invited to participate. These participants would be equipped with digital tools such as laptop computers, LCD projectors, and other tools to follow. These Tech Ambassadors would first become comfortable with District-standard software. Once they had learned how to incorporate technology into their curricula, they would test and develop curriculum solutions for new technologies that could become future District standards. They would also help develop curriculum that integrated technology to share with other teachers in their school centers.

The program was implemented in Fall of 2004 with 180 participants. This project started late due to funding issues and hurricanes. The project was launched in October 2004 with great success. In its first year participants created projects using Inspiration, Kidspiration, TimeLiner, Kid Pix Deluxe, Reading for Meaning, and Science Court. The first year ended with a unique workshop experience with Tech Ambassadors creating one-minute literacy promotions for parents based on the eight tested benchmarks. Visit the gallery page to view projects. The Tech Ambassador project is designed to be ongoing to support the teachers of this District, and is currently moving into the curriculum development and collegial sharing phase.
